Born in Seattle in 1904, Edward Lewis “Bob” Bartlett attended the University of Alaska before turning to journalism and politics. He was nominated secretary of the Alaska Territory by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. He lobbied constantly for statehood, and when Alaska became the 49th state in 1959, he was the first senator from Alaska, serving until 1968.
This striking portrait was completed in 1966.
